Soil Health Leads to Plant Health

Here is the problem... Soil Health.

Much of the world’s productive farming soil has been abused for the most of the past 200 years. A combination of overuse depletion and over application of chemical treatments have combined to greatly impact soil health. As the soil health deteriorated, crop production fell off and attempts to increase yield often included excess use of chemicals ignoring the natural balance needed in the soil to meet the local base soil types, regional climates and appropriate plant selections. These “fertilizers”, often laced with toxic chemicals, can be effective in the short term in that they can stimulate plant and produce growth, but at the same time, they deplete the soil’s natural composition of microbial, nutrient and mineral needed to sustain a healthy ecosystem.

When the soil is stripped of these essential building blocks, the top layer or growth layer of the soil is deteriorated, and the soil’s life is threatened. With the building blocks gone, earthworms and insects are the next at risk. Healthy earthworm populations are often the most visual indicators of soil health. Natural composting of plants and animal casings create the natural organic food for the soil health and a vibrant plant. Without these, soil life essentials disappear and the soil finally loses its ability to sustain life.

As soil health is threatened and impacted, farmers turn to toxic chemicals such as pesticides and fungicides in attempts to feed the plants often ignoring the soil health. The soil continues to suffer losing its natural ability to protect both its and the plant’s health. As this cycle continues, the plant’s natural system is compromised, and it can’t produce the proper micro-nutrients needed for basic health to produce fruit having aesthetic appeal, good nutrient values and be relatively tasteless.

What this all has led to is attempts of artificially engineer plant life to fight off pests and ignore the soil which is often out of sync with nature and completely depleted. Instead of following nature’s natural course securing a healthy base (soil) for plant reproduction, we introduce artificial chemicals, pesticides, etc. to stimulate plant life in damaged soil. A problem is solved—we grow food—but a plethora of other problems are created, including loss of natural vigor and fecundity in our soils. This practice also introduces dangerous chemicals into our worldwide food supplies, and subsequently our bodies. So, how can we begin to restore the soil and free ourselves from all of the dangerous chemicals and toxins that are introduced into our bodies by the foods grown by chemical based fertilizers and pesticides?
